The Force in Fluidity

“Nothing is softer or more flexible than water, yet nothing can resist it.”
–
Lao Tzu

I grew up in a land dominated by water. I was never far from the connecting presence of lakes, rivers, and streams. I spent my late 20s traveling around the world, but no matter how far from home I was, I always felt a sense of belonging when close to water. The bodies of water transcended me into a place otherwise not attainable.

As I explored the world, I became mesmerized by the sheer size and force of the ocean. Humans have taken and shaped our natural world to such an extreme that we often feel a sense of control over it. However, standing in the presence of the ocean you can not help but feel humbled to the power of mother nature: with its giant crashing waves, vast horizons shrinking large ships to a mere dot, the remnants of giant cliffs it has shaped or taken down completely. Nothing can abide.

Water can just as easily take away the life it gives. From droughts to floods, it is the first element in which we feel the effects of climate change. Paintings from this series reflect both the power and tranquility that water can emanate. Frozen in a time unknown, sunset or sunrise, reflecting the uncertainty of our future.

Our world is becoming quickly divided by those moving for change like water, and others resisting it like rock. Despite water being delicate and humble, through persistence and patience it shapes the form of everything it touches. In order to pass the many obstacles we face fighting to save the planet, we can act like water to gradually break through or find another path around.

Despite global sense of hopelessness, every effort to save our planet is not lost. A movement to save our planet is underway: it started small but now large groups of people, governments and corporations are joining in. If we continue to work towards saving the earth, like the tiny drops in the ocean create powerful waves, together we will be the driving force of change.
